College Success Tip #34 - Study Procrastination
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.
Proverbs 12:25
Procrastination can be defined as to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done. Procrastination is evident and seen in many areas of one’s life and can even be discovered in one’s intended study schedule. Higher Education students can have the study room reserved, all their textbooks intact, highlighters, notebooks and pens ready to begin the individual study session but then it happens.............................. P..pr..pro..proc..proca……………….PROCRASTINATION.
Procrastination can appear in the form of not wanting to study and verbally expressing that,. Procrastination can also be physically expressed when one makes the conscious purposeful decision to choose to chill with friends and family during one’s allocated study time. Or Procrastination can be physically expressed when one it can chooses to sleep, peruse through their social media outlets, shopping, talking on the phone, texting, listening to music for extended periods at a time, going out, or anything else but when procrastination comes it is a choice. It is up to the higher education student to make the choice of refusing Procrastination or accepting procrastination.
Now there are some situations where students purposefully choose to procrastinate and that could be because they don’t know how to study. They don’t know where to begin or even how to begin or they don’t know what to expect.
When one has all of those thoughts going on, studying can be overwhelming and one will procrastinate to avoid it all, but it is not wise to procrastinate because the more a student puts off studying the more work the student will have to put in to catch up if you are serious about their educational aims and targets.
Some tips for individuals having issues with Procrastination as it relates to studying are listed below:
Tip # 1 – STOP PROCRASTINATING. Start reviewing your work and aim to do your best. Pray. Ask God for wisdom and put in the action and begin reviewing your notes from class, the points your teacher went over and do it over and over again. Steer clear from the distractions and Aim to do better, with much consistency and dedication you will see improvement.
Tip # 2 – If you are not sure on what to study, GO ASK YOUR PROFESSOR OR THE TEACHER’S ASSISTANT. Even if they attempt to intimidate you with the whole “you are an adult” “don’t expect me to baby you through this course” speech. Remember you are only going to them for advisement on studying. Ask them plainly what are some key things you should be reviewing as it relates to you gearing up for your next test or assignment because you want to do well. From professor to student, most likely they will guide you (if you are a serious student who has actually been coming to class) I did with my students.
Aim to end procrastination!
